International Slavery Museum

Grade I Building

The ISM project reimagines the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool as a deeply engaged cultural space that connects two Grade I–listed dockside buildings into a unified, contemporary home for Black history and maritime heritage. Rooted in co‑creation with the local community, the design process explored how architecture can sensitively confront the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade while giving voice to the people whose identities have been shaped by it. Developed through weeks of immersive research and collaboration, the proposal positioned the museum as an evolving journey woven through the existing fabric of the city—an empathetic, layered, and socially driven transformation.
